Brewing FAQ

Quick answers to the most common questions about choosing, brewing, and enjoying tea.

What water temperature should I use for green tea? +

For green tea, the ideal water temperature is between 75–85°C (167–185°F). Boiling water (100°C) can damage the delicate catechin compounds and make the tea taste bitter and harsh. If you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, bring water to a full boil then let it rest for 2–3 minutes before pouring.

How long should I steep my tea? +

Steeping time depends on the type of tea:

  • White Tea: 2–3 minutes
  • Green Tea: 1–2 minutes
  • Oolong Tea: 1–3 minutes
  • Black Tea: 3–5 minutes
  • Herbal / Tisane: 5–7 minutes

Always start at the lower end of the range and adjust to taste. Over-steeping releases tannins that cause bitterness.

How much loose leaf tea should I use per cup? +

A good starting point is 1 heaped teaspoon (approximately 2–3 grams) of loose leaf tea per 200ml (6–7 oz) of water. Adjust to taste — more leaf for a stronger brew, less for a lighter one. Whole-leaf teas take up more space than fine-cut teas, so judge by weight if possible rather than volume.

Can I re-steep loose leaf tea? +

Yes — many high-quality loose leaf teas can be steeped 2–4 times. White, green, and oolong teas are particularly well-suited to multiple steeps. With each subsequent steep, add 15–30 seconds to the steeping time. Many tea enthusiasts find that the second steep of a quality oolong or green tea is their favourite.

What is the difference between herbal tea and regular tea? +

Traditional teas (green, black, white, oolong, pu-erh) all come from the Camellia sinensis plant. Herbal teas (also called tisanes) are made from other plants — dried herbs, flowers, roots, bark, or seeds. Most herbal teas are naturally caffeine-free, whereas all true Camellia sinensis teas contain some caffeine.

How should I store loose leaf tea? +

Store loose leaf tea in an airtight container away from direct sunlight, heat, and strong odours. Tea can absorb surrounding smells easily, so avoid storing it near spices or coffee. Tin or opaque ceramic containers work best. Properly stored tea will generally stay fresh for 12–24 months, though it is best enjoyed within 6 months of opening.

Is detox tea safe to drink every day? +

Most herbal and detox teas made from all-natural botanical ingredients are perfectly safe to enjoy as part of a balanced daily routine. However, we recommend consulting your doctor or a qualified healthcare professional before adding any new tea blend to your regular diet, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medication, or have any existing health conditions. Some herbs can interact with certain medications.

Does green tea contain caffeine? +

Yes. Green tea contains caffeine, though typically less than black tea or coffee. A standard cup of green tea contains approximately 20–45mg of caffeine, compared to 40–70mg in black tea and 80–150mg in a typical cup of coffee. If you are sensitive to caffeine, consider choosing a herbal or tisane blend instead, which is naturally caffeine-free.

Can I drink tea if I'm pregnant? +

Moderate consumption of some teas is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but certain herbs and high caffeine intake may not be advisable. We strongly recommend consulting your midwife or obstetrician before consuming any herbal blend or caffeinated tea during pregnancy or breastfeeding. This is not medical advice.
